Why I love Minecraft as an artist

Posted on April 20, 2025

Introduction:

I've always been deeply into art, primarily the works of Da Vinci & Slavic illustrators. I also like to design games...well at least levels for them, so one thing I would get deep in study with specifically is architectural studies. Minecraft allows me to use my arcitectural inspiration to create things that I normally wouldn't be able to create in the real world.

"Sometimes the most powerful inspiration comes from quiet places."

Here is a quick gallery of what I’ve been working on:

Engineering & Architecture, I always admited it & had a deep interest with it. When I was younger unsuprisingly I lacked any recources to be creative with these things, so I always worked with what I have, specifically with architecture, I wanted to build grand cathedrals and monuments but never had the education or recognition to do so...plus I was so young, so instead i would go outside and use logs and sticks to build cathedrals and other structrures. Minecraft is a game that I always held very close to my heart and one of the main reasons as to why was because of the amount of control I had over what I did. Minecraft gets a lot critisim for being a terrible survival game, but I never viewed it as one, it was always a sandbox game with some survival elements. Minecraft despite being limited in what you can do in the department of shapes. Never-the-less, minecraft provides so much enjoyment for me because I can take my sketches and ideas in either engineering or architecture and turn them into a structure without needing a degree or tons of recource. (Though with that said I'd love to create something in real life).
In Minecraft, I always prioritised building, more so than getting the best items (though it came to a second as I get tired from dealing with mobs) and despite being a builder, I still always preferred survival mode and playing on hard difficulty as I felt that building in these challenges felt more awarding (plus I like to do other things in the game too.
Most of the time, I build from imagination with little to no reference, but other times I always turn my random sketches, or intentionally sketch, to turn into builds. Here are two examples of it.
The initial sketch was more of a scribble, terribly done, but it gave good result. There are times where replicating something from a drawing to minecraft is difficult but there yet has to be something that I outright can't replicate.
Architecture, specifically doing it in minecraft is a form of self expression for me, similair to when I draw, paint, play music, etc. It is a reflection of what I wish I could build in the real world, but minecraft as a world is pretty complex and populated, specifically in servers, I am able to showcase to everyone my expressions through architecture and in engineering as well.
